HILLWALKING

Scottish Highland Hillwalking

Hillwalking in the Highlands of Scotland

“Because In The End You Won’t Remember The Time You Spent Working In The Office Or Mowing The Lawn. Climb That Goddamn Mountain” – Jack Kerouac

We love the mountains:

They are there for us in all weathers, don’t judge us and their inexplicable beauty keeps us coming back time after time, learning about both them and ourselves in the process…

We Offer…

  • Skills acquisition and improvement for hillwalkers looking to “Do More” with their mountain days, and multi-day multi-Munro epics for the baggers!
  • Guided ascents of specific peaks (Munros, Corbetts, etc – nationwide)
  • Skills for the Hills: improve navigation, hill skills or hill fitness: create a personalised programme to give you the skills and confidence to venture out into the hills safely on your own

Different mountains require different levels of fitness and commitment, and the weather can alter the experience drastically. Each advertised day will clearly state ascent, distance and expected duration involved, plus required level of fitness/prior experience. We have bracketed this into a simple system. Further information is available on each walk page. Please use the key below:

⛰️ = *simple* walk, suitable for most beginners with a reasonable level of personal fitness, but no prior experience. Routes will predominantly follow established paths with little or no exposure. Distance, duration and ascent minimal. Relatively straightforward.

⛰️⛰️ = *challenging* walk, suitable for most with prior hillwalking experience. Routes in this category will be more challenging than the preceding category, without being too full on

⛰️⛰️⛰️ = *difficult* walk, suitable only for those with prior hillwalking experience and established fitness. The days will be long, the routes sometimes pathless, and the experience all the more fulfilling because of the challenge.

⛰️⛰️⛰️🌶️ = a little spiciness is part of this walk. You may encounter an exposed section or two.

A poor forecast is no reason not to go hillwalking – more often than not overcoming this is all part of the challenge of hillwalking and mountaineering, especially in Scotland!

Good waterproofs and a positive attitude go a long way!

Disclaimer: whilst we obviously intend to complete our objectives on the day, your safety and well-being is of paramount importance. Inclement weather conditions on the day may result in an alternative being offered.

It is worth noting that, in winter, the weather conditions have a significant effect on the physical difficulty of the day. The combination of shorter daylight hours, inclement weather and varying snow conditions can produce altogether more physical days than in summer. An “Introductory” day in strong winds and heavy snow can feel like a more taxing affair than the same route under firmer snow and blue skies! However, we will always adapt to the conditions and needs of the participants.  Further information is available on each walk page.  Please use the key below:

⛰️ = *Introductory* walk, suitable for winter newbies or those of limited experience. Due to the nature of winter hillwalking, it is recommended that participants have some summer hillwalking experience, fitness and relative currency as a bare minimum. Multi-day courses will require an element of stamina.

⛰️⛰️ = *Challenging* walk, previous winter hill experience is highly desirable and a good current level of hill fitness is required. Multi-day courses will require an element of stamina.

⛰️⛰️⛰️ = *Demanding* previous winter experience and good current level of hill fitness is required. Being “multi-Munro-fit” may often be necessary to allow us to access some of the more remote routes. Multi-day courses will require a degree of stamina.

⛰️⛰️⛰️🌶️ = a little spiciness is part of this walk. You may encounter an exposed section or two.

The phrase “no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothing/equipment”, is an apt one for venturing into Scotland’s mountains in winter: it really does make all the difference!

As well as warm clothing and decent waterproofs, you will need the “Big Three” items for winter hillwalking:

  1. Winter walking boots B2 or B3 rated that will accept compatible crampons
  2. Walking axe
  3. Walking crampons

The above can be hired from various outdoor outlets or purchased at a discount rate from affiliated retailers (Discount code provided on booking).

Not a problem! One of the most enjoyable aspects of hillwalking is the social side. Group events are a great way to meet like-minded people and make long term friends.
